ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is reportedly pushing its users towards its new social media platform, Lemon8, as a potential ban on TikTok looms in the United States. The Senate is currently considering a bill that could either force ByteDance to divest itself of TikTok or ban the app entirely. This bill has already been passed by the House.
In response to this threat, ByteDance has started paying TikTok influencers to promote Lemon8, an app similar to Instagram that features inspirational posts about food, beauty, wellness, and travel.
One influencer revealed that she was offered $200 to upload a video promoting Lemon8 on TikTok shortly after the House passed the bill. However, she declined the offer, stating that the amount was not sufficient for her to promote a product she did not use. Other influencers have acknowledged working with ByteDance to build a following on Lemon8, despite having significantly fewer followers on the new platform compared to TikTok.
In the past week, nearly a dozen TikTok influencers have posted videos promoting Lemon8, including a link to download the app.
