Microsoft’s Gaming Chief Advocates for Xbox-Based Handhelds Over Windows

Microsoft’s gaming chief, Phil Spencer, has expressed a preference for Xbox handhelds over Windows in a recent interview with Polygon. He stated that he wants portable gaming consoles like the Lenovo Legion Go or the ROG Ally to feel “more like an Xbox.” He also mentioned that the issues he usually encounters are more Windows-based than device-based.

Spencer did not announce a portable handheld Xbox console, but his statements leaned in that direction. He appreciated the innovation in new form factors by companies like Valve, Lenovo, and Asus. He also noted that when he’s playing on these devices, it almost feels more like a console than a PC.

Microsoft has been discussing a portable gaming device for decades. An update of the Xbox app in 2023 paved the way for better portable gaming. Spencer seems to be suggesting that if Microsoft were to introduce a portable gaming console into the market, it would have a choice between taking a Windows/Surface approach or an Xbox approach. And Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s gaming guru, would prefer it to come from Xbox instead.
