Microsoft has made it mandatory for Windows AI PC manufacturers to include a Copilot key. This key, which replaces the Function key at the bottom right of the keyboard with a Copilot logo, brings up the Copilot app when pressed. Initially, it was speculated that the inclusion of this key would be optional, but Microsoft has now made it a requirement for all AI PC keyboards.
The definition of an AI PC by Microsoft includes the presence of a Copilot key and a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which are key hardware and software components for AI capabilities on Windows. Despite this, there may be some systems, like Asus’ new ROG Zephyrus, which have already shipped with Intel’s new Core Ultra chips, that do not technically meet Microsoft’s strict requirements as they do not have a Copilot key. However, they are still considered AI PCs by Intel.
Intel is hopeful that Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) will adhere to Microsoft’s requirements and add the Copilot key over time. The value that OEMs will receive in return for adhering to Microsoft’s AI PC definition is still unclear. Microsoft has not yet commented on its AI PC plans. Despite the challenges, the AI PC trend is pushing Windows system requirements forward.
