Viewing the Total Solar Eclipse of April 2024

North America will experience its first solar eclipse in almost a decade on April 8, 2024. This event is significant as the next one isn’t expected until August 2044. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and the earth, blocking the sun’s rays from reaching the earth’s surface. The total solar eclipse will be visible in Mexico, the United States, and a small section of eastern Canada. Major Mexican cities where the total solar eclipse can be seen are Mazatlán, Durango, and Torreón. In the US, locations include Dallas, Texas; Russellville, Arkansas; Carbondale, Illinois; Greenwood, Indiana; and Buffalo, New York. The eclipse will occur in the afternoon and potentially last around four minutes. If you’re unable to experience it in person, NASA will be livestreaming the event on YouTube.
