Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 are both flagship-tier processors, but they differ in several ways. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Qualcomm’s most cutting-edge smartphone processor in 2024, powers phones like the Galaxy S24 series. However, the newly launched Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 offers a slightly different configuration. It has one Cortex-X4 big core, four Cortex-A720 medium cores, and three Cortex-A520 little cores, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 offers higher clock speeds, one less little core, and one more medium core.
Both chips use the TSMC 4nm manufacturing process, support LPDDR5X RAM, and have the same FastConnect 7800 connectivity suite. However, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3’s Adreno GPU is derived from last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, missing out on global illumination tech. Despite this, Qualcomm claims it has some optimizations, resulting in improved ray tracing performance compared to last year’s chip as well as improvements at low performance and low power.
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 also supports generative AI models with up to 10 billion parameters, but Qualcomm acknowledges that its processing time for AI models is slower than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. This means you should expect slower speeds when generating images, for example. Despite these differences, both chips are positioned as flagship-tier processors, making them suitable for high-end smartphones.
