Turn Off Apple’s Journal ‘Discoverable by Others’ Setting

  1. On your iPhone, open Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap Privacy and Safety
  3. Tap Journaling Suggestions
  4. Scroll down and toggle off Discoverable by Others

Apple’s Journal app in iOS 17.2 has a feature that automatically opts you into sharing your location with people around you. However, the implications of this feature are complex and may not be immediately clear to users. If you prefer to opt out of this feature, it’s important to know that once you’ve turned on Journaling Suggestions, it can be challenging to find your way back to that control. The Journal app is designed to minimize distractions, encouraging users to write more often. As a result, after the initial setup, the app tends to hide these options. Currently, when you open the app, you’re presented with only three things: your journal entries, a basic filter button, and a large Plus sign for starting a new entry. The filter button allows you to view all entries, those with photos, or those with associated locations. However, there’s currently no way to search the Journal for specific mentions.
