UN Unanimously Adopts First Global AI Resolution

The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously adopted the first global resolution on artificial intelligence. This landmark resolution, proposed by the United States and co-sponsored by China and 122 other nations, encourages countries to safeguard human rights, protect personal data, and monitor AI for potential risks. The resolution also advocates for strengthening privacy policies.

The resolution is a response to concerns that the improper or malicious use of AI systems could pose risks that undermine the protection, promotion, and enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms. The resolution is nonbinding, but it represents a significant step towards global governance of AI.

The resolution follows a series of initiatives by governments worldwide to shape AI’s development amid fears it could disrupt democratic processes, turbocharge fraud, or lead to dramatic job losses. The resolution is seen as a balance between furthering AI development while continuing to protect human rights.

The adoption of this resolution is a clear indication that all 193 members of the United Nations General Assembly have chosen to govern artificial intelligence rather than let it govern us, as stated by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
