Ubisoft, in collaboration with Nvidia and InWorld, has introduced AI-powered non-playable characters (NPCs), known as “NEO NPCs”. These NPCs are designed to allow players to have actual conversations, breaking away from the traditional dialogue tree of pre-determined answers. The characters are created by a human writer who works closely with data scientists to train an AI model on their vision for a specific character. Despite the characters’ language being a bit awkward, their dialogue seems solid for a prototype. However, it’s unclear when this technology will be incorporated into video games. One challenge is ensuring that the AI-powered bots are predictable enough to play their parts in the game’s storyline.
