Neuralink’s Brain Implant Receiver Demonstrated his Ability to Control a Computer with His Thoughts

Neuralink, co-founded by Elon Musk, has introduced its first human subject to receive the company’s brain implant. The recipient, a 29-year-old man named Noland Arbaugh, has been paralyzed from the shoulders down for eight years following a diving accident. In a livestream, Arbaugh demonstrated his ability to control a computer using the Neuralink device. He can play online chess and the video game Civilization by moving the cursor on the screen with his thoughts. Neuralink’s brain-computer interface decodes movement intention from brain signals, aiming to allow paralyzed people to control a cursor or keyboard using just their thoughts. The company received FDA approval last year to move ahead with an initial human trial and began recruiting paralyzed participants in the fall to test the device.
