Android 15 is set to introduce a new app archiving feature that will allow users to save storage space on their devices without completely uninstalling apps. The feature, which is expected to debut in the stable release of Android 15, will enable users to archive unused apps while preserving their data. When an app is archived, everything except the icon and code is removed, significantly reducing the storage space it occupies. For example, archiving the Uber app on a Pixel 8 Pro reduced its storage footprint from 387MB to just 18 MB. However, upon restoring the app, all user data remains intact, eliminating the need to log in again. Users will have the option to archive apps manually or let their phone handle it automatically. The feature is currently a Google Play feature but is expected to operate at the OS level upon launch. With a fast internet connection, reinstalling an archived app should take just a few seconds, and everything will be exactly as it was before archiving.
