Gen Z’s Thrift Shopping on Facebook Marketplace

For Gen Z, Facebook has become a marketplace for thrift shopping rather than a social platform. Ellicia Chiu and Cher Su, two friends who moved from Los Angeles to New York, furnished their new apartment with secondhand items found on Facebook Marketplace. Chiu, 24, spends most of her social time on TikTok and Instagram but uses Facebook solely for Marketplace. For many in their early 20s with limited disposable income, Marketplace is a place to find deals on items they wouldn’t normally be able to afford. Despite Facebook’s declining popularity as a social site among Gen Z, its Marketplace has become a popular platform for secondhand goods.
