FCC Redefines Broadband to 100Mbps Download and 20Mbps Upload Speeds

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has updated its definition of “broadband” to mean download speeds of 100 megabits per second and upload speeds of 20 megabits per second, a significant increase from the previous 25Mbps/3Mbps standard set in 2015. This change is expected to impact the FCC’s ability to regulate broadband providers and assess the broadband gap in the United States. The new standard is based on federal and state funding requirements, consumer usage patterns, and what internet service providers offer and market. However, nearly 28% of Americans in rural areas still lack access to these speeds.
