AI can influence election votes. How to spot and respond to it.

To combat AI-generated election misinformation, developing stronger media literacy is crucial. Misinformation watchdog NewsGuard has tracked AI’s weaponization in various forms, including generating low-quality news websites from scratch and creating deepfake videos, audio, and images. In response to these concerns, Alphabet has restricted the types of election-related questions Google’s AI model Gemini (formerly Bard) can respond to, and OpenAI has released new election policies to combat misinformation, including better transparency around the origin of images and tools used to create them, as well as a future AI image detection tool.

To spot AI-generated election misinformation, Sadeghi suggests looking for inconsistencies in the content, such as unnatural facial expressions or movements in videos, and checking the source of the information. Additionally, being cautious of sensationalist headlines and verifying information with multiple sources can help identify and prevent the spread of misinformation.
