New York Times Cracks Down on Wordle Clones

The New York Times has issued cease-and-desist notices to numerous developers who created clones of the popular word game Wordle. Since acquiring Wordle in 2022, the Times has seen a surge in spin-offs, prompting them to take legal action against those infringing on their copyright and trademarks. The newspaper has filed several Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown requests on GitHub, targeting projects that replicate Wordle’s gameplay and use its trademark without permission. The Times clarified that it does not oppose the creation of similar word games, provided they do not violate Wordle’s intellectual property rights. GitHub has given the implicated user a chance to modify the code to comply with the takedown notice.
