Hackers Increasingly Target Public School Students’ Data

Hackers are increasingly targeting public school students, as seen in a significant cyberattack on Minneapolis Public Schools. The breach, initially downplayed as a “system incident,” turned out to be a ransomware attack where sensitive data, including health records and identifiable student information, was stolen. This incident is part of a growing trend of cyberattacks on schools, with the number of reported attacks on K-12 systems more than doubling from 45 in 2022 to 108 in 2023. The stolen data can have long-lasting effects on students, potentially affecting them into adulthood. In response, Minneapolis Public Schools offered affected individuals free credit monitoring services for a year and provided guidance on how to protect their information.
