EU Introduces First Comprehensive AI Regulations

The European Union has passed a landmark AI Act aimed at protecting citizens from high-risk AI while promoting innovation. The law bans certain AI applications that infringe on citizens’ rights, including biometric categorisation systems, emotion recognition in workplaces and schools, social scoring, predictive policing based solely on profiling, and AI that manipulates human behaviour or exploits vulnerabilities. Exceptions are made for law enforcement under strict conditions. The law also sets clear requirements for high-risk AI and defines obligations for those deploying such applications. The AI Act is seen as a trailblazing move, establishing Europe as a leader in the field.
