The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self Driving systems, along with similar advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) from other manufacturers, a ‘poor’ rating in its latest safety evaluation. Out of 14 systems tested, 11 received this lowest rating, including those from Ford and Nissan. The IIHS emphasizes that despite the convenience these systems may offer for long drives, there’s little evidence to suggest they enhance overall driving safety. This assessment comes after a December 2023 recall of Tesla’s Autopilot for a software update aimed at improving driver attention alerts. The IIHS plans to continue monitoring and retesting these systems as they are updated. General Motors, whose Super Cruise system was also evaluated, stressed the importance of safely expanding access to their hands-free system as an enhancement to the driving experience, highlighting the ongoing debate around the safety and efficacy of partial automation in vehicles.
