In a landmark shift, Apple has announced that it will allow developers to distribute iOS apps directly to users from their own websites, a move prompted by the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). This new policy, titled “More options for apps distributed in the European Union,” enables developers to bypass the App Store, offering apps and linking out to external promotions without adhering to Apple’s previous guidelines. Additionally, companies can create “alternative marketplaces” to distribute their apps exclusively. However, developers must still be part of the Apple Developer Program, and a Core Technology Fee applies to web-distributed apps. This change currently applies only within the EU, with other regions continuing to use the App Store for app distribution.
