The United States aims to reduce its reliance on Taiwan and South Korea for semiconductor manufacturing. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo stated the US wants to help the Philippines double its chip facilities to diversify the global supply chain’s geographic concentration. Her comments followed announcing over $1 billion in US company investments in the Philippines as part of a trade mission led by Raimondo. Like Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Raimondo is encouraging Southeast Asian nations to increase chipmaking investments, as Taiwan and South Korea currently dominate the industry. Lessening this dependence on a few nations is a priority for securing the US chip supply.
