Instagram’s strategy of copying features from other apps is proving successful, particularly against TikTok. Instagram’s Reels feature, similar to TikTok, was initially criticized but has now become a mainstay on the app. This strategy has helped Instagram overtake TikTok in new app downloads for the first time since 2020, with Instagram downloads growing 20% compared to TikTok’s 4%. Instagram’s success is also attributed to its ability to adapt features from other apps, much like the character Kirby in Super Smash Bros. However, TikTok is facing challenges on multiple fronts, including a potential ban in the U.S. if Congress passes the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act”.
