Google is taking steps to limit the AI-powered search spam it inadvertently helped create. A “March 2024 core update” to Google’s ranking algorithms aims to reduce “spammy, low-quality content on Search.” The update targets sites that seem to be created for search engines rather than people, including those created to match very specific search queries or those producing content at scale to boost search ranking. Google estimates that this update, combined with previous efforts, will reduce low-quality, unoriginal content in search results by 40%. This move comes in response to several high-profile search spam incidents.
