AMD's Made-for-China AI Chips Are Too Powerful

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has developed a modified artificial intelligence (AI) accelerator, the MI309, specifically for the China market. However, the US Department of Commerce has rejected it, citing that the chip is too powerful to be sold to China without a license. This comes amidst the ongoing tech trade barriers between the US and China. Despite these challenges, AMD and other tech companies continue to pursue the lucrative China market. The US has previously adjusted its export rules to include all of Nvidia’s made-for-China chips, prompting Nvidia to launch more downgraded chips.
