Broken moon lander beams back a final photo -of Earth

Intuitive Machines’ Odysseus moon lander, which had been operational since March 2021, recently transmitted a final poignant image before losing power. The image shows the cratered grey surface of the moon spreading to the lunar horizon, with a crescent of shadowed Earth visible near the top-left. The lander, now lying on its side after snapping a leg during landing, completed this farewell transmission before the freezing, two-week lunar night swept over it. Despite the compromised state, the lander managed to beam back scientific data from all of NASA’s equipment. The mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which aims to expand the lunar economy to support future crewed Artemis missions.
