OpenAI says NY Times ‘hacked’ ChatGPT to build copyright lawsuit, generate misleading evidence

OpenAI has requested a federal judge to dismiss parts of a copyright lawsuit filed by The New York Times. The AI company alleges that the newspaper “hacked” its chatbot, ChatGPT, to generate misleading evidence for the case. OpenAI claims that the Times violated its terms of use by using “deceptive prompts” to make the technology reproduce its material. The company further alleges that it took the Times “tens of thousands of attempts to generate the highly anomalous results.” The lawsuit was filed in December, accusing OpenAI and Microsoft of using millions of its articles without permission to train chatbots. Tech companies argue that their AI systems make fair use of copyrighted material and that such lawsuits threaten the growth of the potential multitrillion-dollar industry.
