Gboard is gaining the ability to copy text from the real world

  • Gboard has introduced a Scan Text feature, which allows users to copy text from the real world.
  • This feature is a simplified version of Google Lens’s optical character recognition (OCR) functionality.
  • To use it, tap the tools menu in Gboard, select Scan Text, and grant camera permission.
  • The camera viewfinder will appear on the bottom half of your screen.
  • Take a photo of the text, highlight the desired text, and tap “insert” to add it to your current text field.
  • This feature does not offer other Google Lens features like web searches or translation functionality.
  • It’s a convenient way to copy/paste real-world text without needing to add it to your clipboard first.
