iMessage dodged EU's 'gatekeeper' label, but WhatsApp didn't. Here's why.

Apple’s iMessage and Microsoft’s Bing, Edge, and online advertising service have been exempted from the EU’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulations. The European Commission concluded that these services do not qualify as “gatekeeper services”, thus avoiding regulations that would have required them to open up to third-party integrations and cross-platform interoperability. Despite this, Apple and Microsoft are still viewed as “gatekeepers” under the DMA, meaning they will continue to be scrutinized for potential “gatekeeper services”. This decision has been welcomed by both companies.
