Taiwanese chip companies are expanding in Japan, supporting a new TSMC plant and the Japanese semiconductor sector. This shift is due to changing alliances and priorities in the global chip industry as the U.S. aims to limit China’s progress in advanced semiconductors and strengthen partnerships between its allies. Alchip Technologies, a fabless chipmaker, is moving roles overseas, many to Japan, due to the China decoupling trend. At least nine Taiwanese chip firms have set up or expanded operations in Japan over the past two years. The weak yen has made such decisions easier. Japan’s efforts to rebuild its semiconductor industry are getting a boost as more Taiwanese chip companies expand there.
