What the U.S. can learn from Norway when it comes to EV adoption

Norway has the highest electric vehicle (EV) adoption rate in the world, with 82% of new car sales in 2023 being EVs. This is in stark contrast to the U.S., where only 7.6% of new car sales were electric. The Norwegian government incentivized EV purchases as early as the 1990s with benefits like free parking, use of bus lanes, no tolls, and no taxes on zero-emission vehicles. Sales took off about 10 years ago with the availability of Tesla and other EV models. Norway’s grid has been able to handle the influx of EVs due to its abundance of hydropower1.
