University of Michigan Says It's Not Selling Student Data to AI Companies

The University of Michigan is reportedly selling student data to AI companies. The data includes recordings of lectures, student discussions, office hours, and essays written by seniors and grad students. It’s unclear whether students gave their consent. The data is being offered to tech workers at Google and other companies to train large language models. The data is available for a licensing fee. The offer includes 85 hours of lectures, discussion sections, and interviews for $15,595, and 829 papers written by University of Michigan students across various disciplines for $12,595. A discount package for both data sets is available at $25,000. The University appears to be working with an organization called Catalyst Research Alliance, which also claims to partner with North Carolina State University. It’s worth noting that while the data set is small, well-organized content on a narrow swath of subjects could be useful for tuning certain models.
