Hackers got nearly 7 million people’s data from 23andMe. The firm blamed users in ‘very dumb’ move

Nearly 7 million users’ data from 23andMe was leaked on a hacker forum. The data includes names, phone numbers, email addresses, Facebook IDs, and profile information. The data was reportedly hacked by a cyber criminal named ‘algoatson’ on Discord in October 2023, who breached a contractor managing cloud services for Facebook. The data was verified by cross-checking with known email addresses and phone numbers linked to Facebook Marketplace. This is not the first time such a data leak has been reported. In 2021, records of over 530 million Facebook users were leaked online. As a result, Meta was fined 265 million Euros for violating the European Union’s GDPR, which protects user privacy. Users are advised to change their Facebook passwords, turn on two-factor authentication, and be vigilant about any suspicious emails or texts as they may be phishing attempts using the leaked Facebook data.
