Apple confirms it’s breaking iPhone web apps in the EU on purpose

Apple has confirmed that the recent issues with iPhone web apps, also known as Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), in the EU are not a bug. The company updated its website to explain that the changes are due to the new EU regulation, the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA requires different browser engines, which has led to complexities that Apple blames for the change.

In the iOS 17.4 beta, PWAs were demoted to website shortcuts, losing features like dedicated windowing, notifications, and long-term local storage. When a web app is opened while running the iOS beta, the system asks if the user wants to open the app in Safari or cancel. This has led to issues with data loss and non-functioning notifications.

Apple states that due to the numerous changes required to comply with the DMA, continued support for PWAs was not feasible. The company has built its support for Home Screen web apps directly on WebKit, Safari’s browser engine, and its security architecture1.
