AI May Be Atrophying Our Brains, Professor Warns

Artificial Intelligence (AI) may be causing our brains to atrophy, warns neuropsychology expert Umberto León Domínguez from the University of Monterrey in Mexico. His research suggests that AI chatbots could significantly harm our cognitive functioning. The concern is around “cognitive offloading,” where AI takes over mental tasks like problem-solving that we currently do by thinking. Over-reliance on AI for thought processes may weaken our minds the way not exercising weakens our muscles, leading to atrophy. While cognitive offloading can free up cognitive load for more complex cognitions, Domínguez is worried that tools like ChatGPT may be capable of planning and making decisions on our behalf. He argues that the development of complex intellectual abilities requires active participation and cannot solely rely on technological assistance.
